Taekwondo Sparring - an Olympic Sport

Olympic Sparring is the SPORT aspect of Taekwondo. The oldest governing body for Taekwondo is the Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA), formed in 1959 through a collaborative effort by representatives from the nine original Kwans, or martial arts schools, in Korea. The main international organizational bodies for Taekwondo today are the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF), founded by Choi Hong Hi in 1966, and the partnership of the Kukkiwon and World Taekwondo (WT, formerly World Taekwondo Federation or WTF), founded in 1972 and 1973 respectively by the Korea Taekwondo Association.

Gyeorugi, a type of full-contact sparring, has been an Olympic event since 2000. The governing body for Taekwondo in the Olympics and Paralympics is Kukkiwon - World Taekwondo. Since 2000, Taekwondo has been one of only two Asian martial arts (the other being judo) that are included in the Olympic Games. It started as a demonstration event at the 1988 games in Seoul, a year after becoming a medal event at the Pan Am Games, and became an official medal event at the 2000 games in Sydney.

Competitive Sport

Taekwondo Olympic Sparring is a competitive sport that allows students to test their skills in a safe and controlled environment. Sparring is done with FULL protective gear including head, chest, arms, legs, teeth, and groin protection.

Sparring is taught in a very methodical way. Students training in Taekwondo are required to attend Sparring class once they have learned the basic stances and kicks (orange belt). Sparring class will teach students many important skills including coordination, stamina, endurance, self control, self confidence and much more.

We compete in many events throughout the year including State and Nationals through AAU, USNTF, USAT, and more.
